JUKI MO-654DE Serger Review

The JUKI MO-654DE is the standard upgrade recommendation for sewists who have outgrown the Brother 1034D: or who want to start at a higher level from the beginning. At approximately $380, it costs nearly double the 1034D, but the improvements in stitch quality, build refinement, and threading ease are meaningful.

JUKI’s reputation comes from industrial sewing machines: their factory-grade overlockers are used in professional garment manufacturing. The MO-654DE brings that engineering heritage to the home market.

What it is

The MO-654DE is a 2/3/4-thread overlock serger designed for home use. The 2-thread capability (not available on the 1034D) adds flatlock stitching and very lightweight applications to the stitch repertoire. The machine is designed for sewists who sew garments regularly and want professional-quality stitch results.

Who it’s for: Intermediate to advanced sewists upgrading from an entry serger. Sewists who sew knit garments frequently. Anyone who wants JUKI-quality stitch consistency without an industrial machine.

What makes the MO-654DE better than the 1034D

Threading system. JUKI’s lower looper design disengages and snaps to a front-accessible position. This is the clearest improvement for anyone who has struggled with lower looper threading on other machines.

Stitch quality. The stitch formation on the MO-654DE is noticeably more consistent across fabric types. The difference is most apparent on knit fabrics and at varied speeds.

2-thread capability. The 2-thread option enables flatlock stitching (a decorative and functional stitch used in activewear and French seams on lightweight fabric) and very lightweight rolled hem applications.

Differential feed range (0.7–2.0). The wider differential feed range gives more control over stitch behavior on knit fabrics. The 0.7 setting is effective for preventing stretching on stable knits; the 2.0 setting handles high-stretch fabric without waviness.

5-year warranty. Reflects genuine build quality. The 1034D’s warranty terms are not equivalent.

Performance summary

4-thread overlock on woven fabrics: Excellent. Consistent, clean stitch formation.

Knit fabric construction: Best-in-class at this price point. The differential feed handles everything from lightweight jersey to thick ponte reliably.

Flatlock stitch (2-thread): Clean and accurate: a genuine advantage over 3/4-thread-only machines.

Rolled hem: More consistent than the 1034D with less setup adjustment required.

Heavy fabric: Handles layers and weight better than the 1034D. Approaches its limits with very thick material, as all home sergers do.

Pros

  • Superior stitch quality compared to entry sergers: noticeably better on knit fabric
  • Accessible lower looper threading is the best threading experience in this price range
  • 2-thread capability adds flatlock and lightweight applications
  • Wider differential feed range (0.7–2.0) provides more knit fabric control
  • 5-year performance warranty reflects build confidence
  • JUKI industrial heritage: the engineering background is real

Cons

  • Higher price ($380 vs $199 for the 1034D): the gap is real
  • Heavier than the 1034D (15.5 lbs)
  • No coverstitch function (separate machine still required for T-shirt hem topstitching)
  • Threading is easier than the 1034D but still requires a learning curve for serger beginners

Verdict

For sewists who sew garments regularly, particularly with knit fabrics, the JUKI MO-654DE is the correct machine. The stitch quality improvement over the 1034D is tangible, and the threading system addresses one of serging’s persistent friction points. The 5-year warranty reflects the build quality difference.

Budget-sensitive beginners should start with the Brother 1034D. Everyone else should start here.
