Brother 3234DT Serger
The Brother 3234DT is a 2/3/4-thread serger with differential feed, designed for garment sewists who need serger capability at mid-range pricing. It is not a coverstitch machine: that distinction matters, and is clarified below.
What it is
The 3234DT handles 3/4-thread overlocking (the standard serger functions for seam finishing and knit garment construction), differential feed for knit fabrics, and color-coded threading. It is a step up from the entry-level Brother 1034D in threading ergonomics and the addition of 2-thread capability.
Specs:
- 2/3/4-thread capability
- Differential feed
- Color-coded threading
- Up to 1,300 SPM
- Wide table included
- Included feet: standard, gathering, blind stitch
Important clarification: this is not a coverstitch machine
The 3234DT is a serger: it performs overlock stitching. It does not perform coverstitch. Coverstitch (the two-needle topstitch used on T-shirt hems and activewear) requires a separate coverstitch machine. If coverstitch capability is what you need, the Brother 2340CV is a dedicated coverstitch machine, or look at combination machines from Baby Lock or Bernette that combine both functions in one unit.
Who itβs for
Sewists who want a step up from the Brother 1034D. The 3234DT offers 2-thread capability (useful for flatlock stitches and lightweight rolled hems) and differential feed, making it a legitimate upgrade over the 1034D at a mid-range price point.
Garment makers who work with knit fabrics. The differential feed handles jersey, ponte, and stretch fabrics reliably. The 4-thread overlock is the standard construction stitch for knit seams.
What it does well
- 2/3/4-thread versatility adds flatlock capability over the 1034D
- Differential feed handles knit fabrics reliably
- Wide table provides extra support for larger fabric pieces
- Color-coded threading reduces errors
Limitations
Not a coverstitch machine. This point bears repetition because it is the most common misconception about this model.
Stitch quality is below the JUKI MO-654DE. At comparable price points, the JUKI MO-654DE offers better stitch consistency on knit fabrics and a superior lower looper threading system. For knit garment makers who sew regularly, the JUKI is the stronger recommendation.
Verdict
The Brother 3234DT is a capable mid-range serger for sewists who have outgrown the 1034D and want 2-thread flatlock capability without the JUKI price point. Confirm that coverstitch is not what you need before purchasing.
